What is Biltricide Generic | Praziquantel ?
Biltricide [Praziquantel] is an oral medication available in a form of oblong shaped tablets available in bottles of 6 tablets. These oblong tablets have three scores which can be broken into each of four segments containing 150 mg of active ingredient so that the dosage can be easily adjusted to the patient’s bodyweight. The composition of biltricide tablets includes Praziquantel as an active ingredient and other inactive ingredients. Biltricide [Praziquantel] tablets contain 600 mg of praziquantel. Biltricide [Praziquantel] belongs to a class of drugs known as antihelminthics. Biltricide [Praziquantel] is used to treat infections of certain parasites like Schistosoma and liver flukes. Praziquantel increases the permeability of the membranes of Schistosomes. It paralyses the parasites. The dying parasites release their hold or dislodged from their site of action in the host organism and may enter systemic circulation so the body can remove them naturally or may be destroyed by host immune reaction.. |

Biltricide [Praziquantel] is a trematodicide provided in tablet form used for the treatment of schistosoma infections and infections due to liver flukes. |
How to use Biltricide Generic?
For the treatment of schistosomiasis the recommended dose is 20 mg per kg bodyweight three times a day as a one day treatment at intervals of not less than 4 hours and not more than 6 hours.
For the treatment of clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis the recommended dose is 25 mg per kg bodyweight three times a day as a one day treatment at intervals of not less than 4 hours and not more than 6 hours.
Biltricide tablets or segments should be administered with water during meals.

Side effects of Biltricide Generic
Biltricide [Praziquantel] side effects develop from the release of the contents of parasites as they are killed and the consequent host immune reaction. More the parasite burden the heavier and more frequent the side effects normally are.
Side effects reported on central nervous system are dizziness headache malaise drowsiness somnolence fatigue vertigo seizures arachnoiditis and meningism.
Side effects reported on gastro-intestinal tract are abdominal pain or cramps with or without nausea and vomiting diarrhea may be with colic sweating fever and sometimes bloody stools that may occur together with diarrhea.
Side effects reported on liver are asymptomatic and transient increases of liver enzymes.
Certain allergic reactions are reported like urticaria rash pruritus and eosinophilia in WBC.
Other side effects reported using Biltricide are lower back pain myalgia arthralgia fever sweating various cardiac arrhythmias and hypotension.

Biltricide Generic Interaction
Concomitant administration of Biltricide [Praziquantel] and an antibiotic drug like Rifampin are reported to decrease plasmatic concentrations of praziquantel.
Concomitant administration of Biltricide and antiepileptics such as Carbamazepine and phenytoin are reported to reduce the plasma level of praziquantel.
Concomitant administration of Biltricide and antimalarials like Chloroquine are reported to lead to lower concentrations of praziquantel in blood.
Concomitant administration of Biltricide and antacids or histamine h2 antagonists like Cimetidine heightens the plasma level of praziquantel.

Precaution of Biltricide Generic?
Caution should be taken while administering the usual recommended dose of Biltricide [Praziquantel] to hepatosplenic schistosomiasis patients with moderate to severe liver impairment. Reduced metabolism of praziquantel by the liver in these patients may lead to considerably increased and long lasting plasma concentrations of unmetabolized praziquantel.
Praziquantel present in Biltricide is excreted into breast milk so nursing mothers should temporarily stop breast-feeding on the therapy day for 72 hours after taking the last dose.
In Biltricide dosage 80 of praziquantel is excreted in kidneys in the form of metabolites. Excretion may be delayed in patients with damaged kidney function but accumulation of unchanged drug would not be expected.
Patient should be monitored during treatment who is suffering from cardiac irregularities.
It is advised to hospitalize the patient for the duration of treatment of schistosomiasis or fluke infection if is found to be associated with cerebral cysticercosis.
